Binfire.com is better than rapidshare.com

The new binfire.com free share feature "Click to Share now" lets users share files as big as 100MB with family and friends. No registration or login is needed. When the file is received by friends, there are no annoying delays or sale features present, as found in rapidshare.com or other services. The sender can share the same file with multiple friends by typing multiple emails comma separated.
More features are added to http://www.binfire.com/ every day. All services provided by binfire.com are free.

Binfire.com new look

I have seen and read Guy Kawasaki 's videos and blogs on good user interface and website recommendations . I think he is right on the money. The new binfire.com look and feel follows a lot of his recommendation.
I hope the new website is up and running in a few weeks.

BInfire.com New UI

Binfire.com is undergoing a massive change. The UI is totally changed and enhanced. New functionality is added to the site. Now the user will be able to navigate from feature to feature with ease. A new user can share files, video and songs before he registers. The file size is limited to 10 MBytes. Once the user registers there is no file size limit for sharing files. The web storage size is expanded to 25 GBytes (It may be upgraded to unlimited size in near future). The user can use his address book to share files with family and friends.

The group collaboration tools are enhanced. Now anytime a file is uploaded, modified or deleted the group members are notified by internal messaging and external email. The new features will become available in a few weeks. I have copied the new look here.

binfire.com unique features (2)

One of binfire.com strongest and most unique feature is that it gives each registered user two online folders. The first folder is called “private” and could only be accessed by the user (you). All files in this folder are protected and can’t be seen by anybody else. The second folder is called “shared” and this is the folder that the user gives his friend access. The user will send a link to her /his friends. When friends click on this link they enter the user’s home page and have access to his shared folder in addition to other tools the binfire.com user would like to share with them. These include the user’s links, market place and file transfer. All other menu items are disabled. The user’s friends can download or upload files to the user’s shared folder. One feature not implemented yet is the notification. When a file is added, deleted, downloaded or uploaded the user can get an internal message to let him know what events (actions) have occurred in his shared folder.Another very useful feature of binfire.com is that when a number of users become friends in the binfire.com they all have access to each other shared folder through the java applet. To see this invite people you know to become your friend in binfire.com. You can do this by going to friends’ page and invite people you know to add you as their friend. When they accept, you will have access to their shared folder and they have access to your share folder. This way you and your friends could always have access to each other shared folders. Another benefit of this feature is that you can send files from your web folder to your friends web folders at speed of 100 M Bytes per second, and you will not use your own bandwidth to do this.David

Leaving desktop and move to web computing

The idea of freeing people from their desktop and let them use their applications and work on their documents from anywhere and at anytime is appealing. To get there, what is needed is a fast connection to internet, a secure place to upload documents to the web and web applications that can work on documents without downloading them to one’s PC. Currently ISPs limit the speed of download and upload to squeeze more money from their customers. In fact they limit the upload speed on DSL or cable line to a ridiculously low speed of 20-30 Kbytes per second. Consumers need to push ISPs to resolve this issue. New technology like fire optic lines will alleviate this problem.
There are many companies who provide online storage or backup or group collaboration or file management services. At present no company is providing a comprehensive package for all the services that users need to move from desktop to the internet (web computing). Binfire.com is working to provide these services in near future for no cost for average users and very attractive prices for power users and businesses. Binfire.com is in alpha now and user can test run the current features. Soon a new UI and much added functionality will be available. Joining is free and registration only requires your name, email and a password selected by you.

What is needed for file sharing on the web

These are the functionality that is needed for managing files on the web for an individual:
  • A secure place to store files
  • An easy tool for upload and download
  • A tool to backup file
  • A tool to synchronize folders
  • A tool to share these files online
  • A tool that makes the content appealing to whoever receives these files
  • A tool to manage family and friends contacts

To manage the content:

  1. For pictures, the page is shown as a picture gallery
  2. For Video, the page contains the video and the tool to run the video
  3. For Music, the same as video
  4. For all other files make it easy for the user to view or download the file

These are the functionality that is needed for managing files on the web for a group:

  1. A secure and place for the group to save and retrieve files
  2. A large folder
  3. An owner for the group
  4. Tools for the owner to mange the group (members, access and content)
  5. Tools for the users
  6. Notification. If a file is added, modified or deleted all group members are notified
  7. A calender for scheduling tasks
  8. A history log for recording all actions taken by the group

Binfire.com is not there yet, but they are moving in that direction. The folks at Binfire.com are putting a lot of effort to make file sharing and collaboration on the web as easy as possible.

binfire.com review

This is a blog for reviewing file sharing and group collaboration applications on the web against www.binfire.com . Binfire.com is a new web site and under construction. I am trying to get as much functionality in binfire.com as possible for no cost to the end user.
The site already has a cool java applet for the fastest file transfer I have seen anywhere.
You get 5 G-Bytes online storage for free.
You can share files with family and friends.
You can create groups and collaborate around a web folder.

In future post I compare binfire.com against other sites and list new features under development.
